More specifically, I want to quit. I want out of the rat race. I want to work on my own terms.
I want to reach the point where I no longer need to exchange my time and energy in order to live. Everyone has to eat and have a roof over their head. If you can reach the point where you no longer have to actively work to survive, that is what I consider to be the point of financial independence.
In other words, once you are passively generating income that covers your living expenses, you are financially independent and work becomes optional. Every person in the world has aspects of their job that they don’t enjoy, but not everyone has the option to walk away. If things are really bad, being able to quit a job on your own terms without the worry of starving and losing your house must be an incredible feeling. That is what I call FREEDOM. That is what we call FIRE.
Financial Independence + Retire Early = F.I.R.E.
The “FI” part of the equation is key. The “RE” portion is optional. My goal is freedom of choice to do what I want and live on my own terms. This type of freedom is something that everyone wants, but only some are willing to do what it takes to achieve it. The formula is surprisingly simple. Spend less than you earn and invest your money into stable long-term assets that you can confidently assume will appreciate in value over time.
Nothing groundbreaking there. I have no doubt about the fact that I will retire at some point. The element of the equation that I am working to change is when I retire. Retiring at 65 is better than working until I die. Retiring at 40-45 (or even earlier) sounds amazing.
This website and blog serves as a place to document my journey. I know that there will be ups and downs, unexpected surprises, and road bumps that catch me off guard. Hopefully, I can share what I learn with the world though and someone else can learn from my experiences.
